拍品描述
A CORINTHIAN TERRACOTTA KOTHON, GREECE, 6TH CENTURY BCWell-potted, of circular form, the compressed body supported on a short, straight foot and rising to a wide mouth with a deep inturned rim, fitted on one side with an omega-shaped handle. The exterior decorated in crimson and umber with a serpentine band along the edge of the rim, followed by encircling linear bands and borders of alternately set dots. The handle and underside adorned with similar circular motifsProvenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. According to the Myers ledger acquired on 23 March 1973 in Jerusalem, Israel, and in the collection for over 50 years. Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, with ancient wear and firing-inherent irregularities. Distinct traces of use to the interior. Visible fractures and fissures. Expected rubbing and small chips to pigments. Scattered minor nicks and shallow surface scratches. Weight: 317.6 gDimensions: Length 17.8 cmThe kothon, also known as exaleiptron or plemochoe, though scholars debate the exact equivalence of these terms, was designed to prevent its contents from spilling. While its precise function remains uncertain, it appears that this type of vessel was intended to hold perfumes and ointments, typically in gold or silver, or to serve as an oil lamp, thus explaining the function of its strongly inturned rim. Produced in Corinth during the sixth and fifth centuries BC, it was widely exported. Archaeological evidence from Corinth suggests that this form was uncommon in burial contexts and was primarily associated with temple dedications.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related Greek terracotta kothon (perfume vase), Corinth, second half 6th century BC, 15 cm long, in the Metropolitan Museum of Asian Art, object number 62.11.6. Compare a closely related Greek terracotta kothon, Corinth, 550-450 BC, 14.4 cm long, in the British Museum, registration number 1864,1007.325.
