拍品描述
A SMALL BRONZE ARYBALLOS, ROMAN PERIOD, 1ST-2ND CENTURY ADWell-cast, the baluster-shaped body supported on a short, stepped foot with a concentric-ring base, rising to high, rounded shoulders, surmounted by a short, narrow neck, and a double-flanged rim encircling a circular mouth. The exterior covered unevenly in a fine, naturally developed patina, with appealing malachite encrustations.Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Fair condition, commensurate with age, with ancient wear and casting-inherent irregularities. Extensive traces of weathering and corrosion. The bronze surface covered overall with vibrant malachite encrustations, indicating a prolonged period of burial.Weight: 248.4 gDimensions: Height 10.3 cmSmall aryballoi, such as the present lot, were finely crafted flasks primarily intended to contain oils and precious perfumes, which held considerable social and ritual significance in the ancient Mediterranean. Perfumes were highly valued not only for personal adornment but also for religious offerings and funerary practices. During the Roman period, vessels of this type were produced in substantial quantities and in a wide range of materials, including glass, ceramics, stone, and metal. Metal vessels were predominantly fashioned from copper alloys, which were widely accessible throughout the ancient Mediterranean. The malleability and casting properties of bronze permitted vessels to be produced either by casting or by hammering, thereby enabling relatively expedient fabrication.Literature comparison:Compare a closely related bronze aryballos, Roman period, 1st-2nd century AD, 9.4 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 00.13.2. Compare a related bronze vase and cover, Roman period, Southern Italy, 1st century AD, 14.2 cm high, in the Musée du Louvre, collection number ED 2877.Auction result comparison:Type: Related Auction: Bonhams London, 7 July 2022, lot 207 Price: GBP 1,402 or approx.
