拍品描述
Korea, 12th century. Well potted with deep, rounded sides rising from a short, slightly tapered foot. The exterior decorated with a three-tiered band of lotus petals encircling the vessel, covered overall with a deep celadon glaze, extending to the underside, which shows four kiln spur marks.Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Very good condition with old wear and firing-inherent irregularities, including light pitting, occasional dark spots, fine intentional crackling to the glaze, and kiln grit associated with spur marks on the underside.Weight: 339.8 gDimensions: Height 7.2 cm, Diameter 16.2 cmCeladon production on the Korean Peninsula is generally considered to have begun in the mid-10th century, following the direct transmission of ceramic technology from China. During this formative phase, Goryeo workshops produced wares closely aligned with established Chinese traditions, particularly the celadons of the Yue kilns in Zhejiang Province, which flourished from the late Tang dynasty into the Northern Song period between the 9th and 11th centuries, as well as the refined wares of the Ru kilns in Henan Province, developed during the Northern Song dynasty in the 10th and early 11th centuries. Goryeo celadon reached its technical and aesthetic apogee over the course of the 12th century, gradually articulating a distinctive visual language that responded to the refined tastes of the aristocracy.Lotus blossoms and layered lotus petals were among the most favored motifs in Goryeo-period decorative arts. Rising pure and unsullied from muddy waters, the lotus held profound symbolic significance in Buddhist thought, where it was closely associated with spiritual rebirth and transcendence of the soul.
