拍品描述
Korea, 8th-9th century. Boldly carved, seated in dhyanasana with hands crossed before the chest and concealed beneath the voluminous sleeves of his loose-fitting robes, which part slightly to reveal the upper chest of the figure and fall in characteristic pleats over the shoulders. His simplified facial features conveying a serene expression, with heavy-lidded eyes, a broad nose, and full lips curved in a subtle smile, flanked by elongated, pendulous earlobes and crowned by a gently domed ushnisha.Provenance: From The Sam and Myrna Myers Collection, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age, with ancient wear and natural imperfections. Distinct traces of weathering and erosion. Small smoothened chips and shallow surface scratches. The stone surface with scattered areas of soil encrustation, indicating a prolonged period of burial.Weight: 1,160 gDimensions: Height 16.5 cmBuddhism arrived on the Korean peninsula from China in the fourth century, during the period of the Three Kingdoms, with Goguryeo in the north, Baekje in the southwest, and Silla in the southeast. It took more than a century for Buddhism to reach Silla, where by the middle of the sixth century it became the official religion. After Silla unified the peninsula in 668, a century of political stability encouraged the flourishing of Buddhist art and the construction of numerous temples. The present stone figure, created as a small icon for private devotion, exemplifies the refined yet massive style of Buddhist sculpture from the Unified Silla period.Expert note: Seated Buddhas are rarer than their standing counterparts and show close stylistic affinities with Tang dynasty sculpture in China, unlike the elongated standing bodhisattvas and pensive Maitreya figures of the Three Kingdoms period, which reflect the attenuated forms of early Northern Wei sculpture.Literature comparison:Compare a related bronze figure of standing Buddha Shakyamuni, Korea, Unified Silla period, 9th century, 23.8 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 54.106a, b. Compare a related gilt-bronze figure of seated Buddha Shakyamuni, Korea, Unified Silla period, 8th century, offered at Sotheby's New York, 3 September 2013, lot 7.
