Korea, 12th century. Finely potted with deep, rounded sides supported on a short foot rising to a broad rim. Boldly carved at the center encircled by carved foliage. All covered in an even glaze of rich celadon to blue tone.Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.Condition: Good condition with old wear and firing flaws, including fritting, obvious pitting, few dark spots, and a fine U-shaped hairline to the rim.Weight: 456 g Dimensions: Height 5.6 cm, Diameter 17.9 cmHigh-fired ceramics with a green-blue celadon glaze were introduced to the Korean peninsula from China in the tenth century. Within a century or two, Korean artisans had developed their own distinctive tradition of celadon ware, the only variety of high-fired ware produced in the Goryeo period, that received high praise even from the Chinese. The inside of this thin-bodied bowl is decorated with an elegant design of leaves applied with a mold.Literature comparison:Compare a related bowl with floral details, dated to the first half of the 12th century, 18.7 cm (diameter), in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, accession number 2015.79.485. Compare another related bowl with floral details, dated to the 13th century, 18.4 cm (diameter), in the Victoria and Albert Museum, accession number C.584-1918.
