Description

Seated in meditation with his left foot visible, dressed in monk's robes that leave his emaciated chest exposed, the kesa gathered below his left shoulder with an agraffe, the face with “Indian” features, bushy, long eyebrows, and a bulbous nose. The white primer (gofun) is covered with a layer of red pigment, mostly flaked off. Eyes of reverse painted glass. Hands missing. Rakan (Sanskrit: arhat) are disciples of the Buddha who have attained enlightenment. They are depicted with “Indian” or Chinese features, but always with individualised facial characteristics suggestive of an ascetic lifestyle. As role models for Zen monks, they are sculpted in groups of 16 or 18, but also 500, and placed on the upper floor of the main entrance gate or in separate halls of Zen Buddhist temples. As the hands are missing from this figure, the rakan cannot be identified on the basis of the attribute he originally held. However, it is highly likely that this statue represents the rakan Binzuru (Sanskrit: Pindola), who was worshipped in Japan as a deity who heals physical ailments, thus occupying a special position among the rakan. His statues are placed on a large chair in the vestibules of temples so that believers can walk around them and touch the parts of the sculpture that correspond to the parts of their own bodies that are afflicted with illness. Especially in cases of headache and shoulder pain, people would touch the corresponding area, which is why the figures are worn in the face. The present statue was originally painted entirely in a matte red over white gesso (gofun), and the robes are left plain and do not feature any patterns or other details. The eyes of reverse-painted glass (gyokugan), and the open mouth contribute to the expressiveness of the rakan’s face. The sculpture follows the realistic style of the Kamakura period established by Unkei.
