Description

Seated in meditation on a separate lotus throne, his main hands holding vajra and bell in front of his chest, an arrow and bow in his lower hands, a forked stick on which a note can be hung, and a lotus bud in his upper hand. The hair bristling angrily and a lion-headed crown on the head. The incarnate is painted red throughout, the robe has a floral pattern partially in white moriage. The three eyes of back-painted glass. A “sun disc” is inserted behind the figure. Very minor flaking of the pigments. Aizen Myōo is the personification of sensual pleasure, one of the fundamentally negative afflictions of Buddhism that prevent humans from achieving redeeming enlightenment. However, the Shingon doctrine transforms sensual pleasure into a positive, non-erotic feeling of love that is conducive to liberating knowledge. According to its description in the Yugikyō (Yoga Sutra), his body is vermilion, the colour of passion.
