Description

Standing in Chinese robes and ornate shoes, holding an incense burner with a flower-shaped body, a round rod as a handle with a seated lion at its end. He wears the typical hairstyle of a young man. Firmly mounted on a rectangular base. Shōtoku Taishi (572-622), crown prince of Emperor Yōmei, was a passionate follower of Buddhism who was deeply committed to spreading Buddhism in Japan. As a result of the revival of Buddhism in the Kamakura period, the worship of Shōtoku Taishi also flourished. The veneration of Shōtoku Taishi reached its peak in the 12th to 14th centuries, when most of the paintings and sculptures representing him were created. The depiction of the present figure of a standing young man with binzura hair buns and an incense burner (egōro) shows the 16-year-old prince praying for the recovery of his sick, bedridden father Yōmei, thus embodying a prime example of filial piety.
