A JADE TURBULAR ‘MASK’ BEAD, NEOLITHIC PERIOD, LIANGZHU CULTURE
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

Published: Myrna Myers (ed.) & Filippo Salviati (auth.), The Language of Adornment. Chinese Ornaments of Jade, Crystal, Amber and Glass, Paris, 2002, no. 27.

China, c. 2500 BC. Of elongated, cylindrical form, superbly carved with four registers, each divided by horizontal bands and decorated with two zoomorphic masks. The now near opaque stone is completely calcified with ochre and russet nuances. Drilled from both sides with a wide central perforation.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Good condition with wear, traces of weathering and signs of prolonged burial, minuscule nibbling, smoothened nicks, and natural fissures, some of which have developed into small hairline cracks.

Weight: 41 g
Dimensions: Height 9.5 cm

In ancient China, jade was the preferred material for bead making, and artisans often utilized remnants from larger jade objects for resourceful usage of the prized stone. This approach is evident in Liangzhu culture beads, many of which bear the iconic mask motif. After the Neolithic period, beads fell out of favor for a time, but their use saw a resurgence during the Western Zhou dynasty.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related ivory-white jade pair of ‘mask’ beads, dated to ca. 3300-2200 BC, in the British Museum, registration number 2022,3034.65.
