A MOTTLED YELLOW AND OLIVE-GREEN JADE NEEDLE-FORM PENDANT, LIANGZHU CULTURE
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

Published: Myrna Myers (ed.) & Filippo Salviati (auth.), Radiant Stones. Archaic Chinese Jades, Paris, 2000, no. 18.

China, ca. 2800 BC. Finely carved as an upright, elongated and awl-shaped ornament with one end pointed and the other pierced and rounded. The opaque stone of mottled olive-green and yellow with ivory-white and ochre calcification.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Very good condition with wear, traces of weathering and signs of prolonged burial, nibbling, and small nicks.

Weight: 25 g
Dimensions: Length 15.5 cm

The different locations of these needle- or awl-shaped pendants in Liangzhu culture burial sites suggest that they may have served multiple purposes. In several instances, sets have been found near the head of the deceased. For example, at the Fanshan site in Yuhang, Zhejiang, the largest known group was uncovered. At the Fuquanshan site in Qingpu, Shanghai, a tomb contained six awl-shaped ornaments that likely once formed a necklace. Five additional pieces were found near the lower limbs, suggesting that the ornaments may have also been worn at the waist.
