A CELADON AND BROWN JADE AXE, NEOLITHIC PERIOD
This lot is from a single owner collection and is therefore offered without reserve

China, Dawenkou or Longshan culture, c. 2200-2000 BC. The slightly flared rectangular blade pierced from one side with a hafting hole opposite the gently curved beveled cutting edge. The semi-translucent stone is of a grayish-green hue with russet and blackish-brown patches and veins.

Provenance: The Collection of Sam and Myrna Myers, Paris, France. Acquired between circa 1965-2012.
Condition: Very good condition with expected wear, signs of burial and traces of weathering, erosion, some nibbling and small smoothened losses to edges, the stone with natural fissures, some of which may have developed into small hairline cracks.

Dimensions: Height 24.6 cm

Large and imposing jade blades, thinly cut and carved of opaque greenish-brown stones with smoothly polished surfaces are generally associated with the neolithic Dawenkou and Longshan cultures of eastern China.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related Longshan jade chisel, 20.4 cm high, in the Harvard Art Museums, object number 1943.50.12.
