Wrathful Rahula is a fearsome Dharmapala in Tibetan Buddhism, particularly venerated in the Nyingma tradition, where he plays a central role in tantric protective rituals. Originally stemming from the Indian mythological figure Rahu, the demon who swallows the sun and moon during eclipses, Rahula was transformed into a powerful Buddhist protector through tantric ritual and visionary experience, notably by Padmasambhava, who is said to have subjugated and bound him by oath. His cult is widespread in Tibet, Bhutan, and Mongolia, and his image often appears in tantric thangkas alongside other fierce protectors such as Ekajati and Dorje Legpa.
