Description

A FINE THANGKA OF A MANDALA WITH CHATURBHUJA MAHAKALA, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

Tibet or Nepal. Gold and distemper on cloth, with a silk brocade frame, mounted as a hanging scroll with a wood handle. Painted in vibrant colors with a mandala palace enclosed by foliate lappets and surrounded by Buddhas, precious vases, and cloud-borne apsaras, encircled by bands of lotus petals, stylized vajras, multicolored scrolling foliage, and shaped cartouches containing scenes of deities, stupas, and landscapes.

The lower register with Chaturbhuja Mahakala striding atop prostrate figures on a lotus base, engulfed in flames as he holds a skullcup and flaying knife in his primary hands and a sword and trident staff in his raised secondary hands, his blue-skinned body richly adorned with jewelry, his face with a wrathful expression, his golden flaming hair secured by a skull tiara. All within a verdant landscape with towering mountains, gushing waterfalls, and wispy clouds.

The lower margin with a gold inscription in Nepali script.

Provenance: From a Belgian private collection.
Condition: Very good condition with old wear, minor creasing, soiling, few small losses to pigments. The mounting with expected wear, tears, minor losses.

Dimensions: Image size 53.5 x 37.5 cm, incl. mounting 104 x 62.5 cm

Chaturbhuja Mahakala is the principal protector deity of the Kagyu school. In addition to being the guardian of the Chakrasamvara cycle of Tantras, Chaturbhuja Mahakala also serves as a meditational deity, and thus can be regarded as an alternate emanation of either Chakrasamvara or the Primordial Buddha Vajradhara. In this four-armed representation, Mahakala wields a flaming sword and a trident in his secondary hands. In his primary hands, he holds the ritual flaying knife (kartika) symbolizing the peeling away of negative thoughts, and the skull-cap bowl (kapala) representing the containment of impurities.

A mandala is an aid for meditation, with the main object of veneration in the center. In an initiation ritual, the meditator slowly approaches the center and transforms his or her body and mind into that of the deity. Along the way, the meditator encounters various scenes of religious and historic significance, which aid in his or her meditational journey.
