Description

? A RARE SILVER-INLAID BRONZE FIGURE OF AN OX

China, 18th century or earlier. Naturalistically cast, the ox is depicted in a recumbent pose with its head raised and turned slightly to the left. Its legs are neatly folded beneath the body, and the tail curves gently to one side. Fine silver wire inlays decorate the head and back, rendering detailed fur patterns and two radiant sun motifs.

Provenance: The private collection of Marcel Nies, Belgium. The private collection of Jules Speelman, London, United Kingdom, acquired from the above. Marcel Nies is a Belgian art expert and dealer who specializes in important works of art from Southeast Asia, India, and the Himalaya regions. He has supplied works of art to important private collections and museums, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the museum for Ostasiatische Kunst K?ln, the Victoria and Albert Museum London, the Rietberg Museum Zurich, the Metropolitan Museum New York, the Asian Art Museum San Francisco, the Barbier-Mueller Museum Dallas, and the Asian Civilization Museum in Singapore. Jules Speelman is a world-leading dealer and collector of East Asian art with 60 years of experience. In 1964 he joined his late father, Alfred, in the family business which already stretched back three generations to 19th century Holland and expanded into England around the turn of the century. Originally, A & J Speelman dealt with antiques, from European ceramics, silver, tapestries, and furniture to Chinese porcelain, and works of art. With his father, Jules gradually shifted the focus towards Asia and under Jules Speelman's skilled direction, A & J Speelman is now considered amongst the foremost dealers in Asian antiques, with a particular emphasis on figurative sculpture and works of art from the past 2000 years.
Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, casting irregularities including two small copper fills to the base, expected losses to inlays, scattered nicks and surface scratches. The base with a rectangular recess, possibly once made to hold an inlaid plaque of some sort.

The ox was a popular subject in the decorative arts as well as in painting. Smaller bronze examples like this one may have been influenced by the large recumbent bronze ox cast for the Qianlong Emperor in 1755, which stands beside Kunming Lake.
