Description

A BRONZE ‘QUAIL AND MILLET’ CENSER, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

China. Well modelled standing on a naturalistically cast openwork base in the form of a sprig of millet, its head raised and beak agape, neatly detailed with almond-shaped eyes and round pupils, the cover finely cast as the bird’s plumage, the body with subtly incised feathers.

Provenance: From a French private collection.
Condition: Overall good condition with minor wear, traces of use, casting irregularities, old repairs to the feet and body, nicks, small losses, two stress cracks to the rim, the base with few old repairs.

Weight: 412.7 g
Dimensions: Height 12.6 cm

Expert’s note:
Similar bronze censers in the form of quails were produced by the female artist Tsumura Kamejo (d. 1772) during the Edo period in Japan. She inherited her father’s foundry and continued producing incense burners using the lost-wax casting technique. Compare a related bronze censer in form of a quail, by Kamejo, dated to the Edo period, in the Walters Art Museum, accession number 54.1367.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related bronze censer in form of a quail, dated to the 17th-18th century, exhibited by Brandt Asian Art at Asian Art in London Fall 2014.
