Description

A LARGE BRONZE TRIPOD CENSER WITH OPENWORK COVER, 19TH CENTURY

China, Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). Heavily cast, the slightly flattened body with a waisted neck and a broad everted rim applied with two u-shaped handles, supported on three chilong heads, the body decorated with archaic motifs against a key-fret ground. With a matching hardwood cover carved in openwork with peaches and double gourds borne on intricate gnarled branches, the brown wood neatly stained to highlight the fruits. With a hardwood stand shaped as three Ruyi heads.

Inscriptions: To the base, ‘Yutang qingwan’ (pure please of the Jade Hall).

Provenance:
Private collection in Paris.
Condition: Good condition with expected wear, casting flaws, small nicks here and there, and shallow surface scratches. The censer with a fine light brown patina. The cover with two filled age cracks and the finial lost.

Weight: 6,798 g the censer, 8,239 g in total
Dimensions: Height 34 cm (the censer), and 47 cm (incl. stand and cover). Width 24 cm (handle to handle)
