Description

A MASSIVE BRONZE ‘CHILONG’ TRIPOD CENSER, QING DYNASTY

China, 1644-1912. Heavily cast as three large upturned peaches with elongated tips forming the feet, and rising to a short neck with everted rim, flanked by a pair of finely modeled chilong with richly incised manes and scales.

Provenance: French art trade. A private collection in Vienna, Austria, acquired from the above.
Condition: Good condition with old wear and casting irregularities, expected small nicks and light scratches, few minor dents, the wood stand and cover with natural age cracks, the finial with small cracks and remnants of adhesive.

Weight: 8.9 kg
Dimensions: Height 28 cm (the censer) and 44 cm (total)

With a fitted hardwood stand of foliate form and a wood cover pierced with ruyi heads and topped by a jade finial shaped like a magnolia with a spider on top, all dating from the same period. (3)
