Description

A RARE GREEN CHLORITE STELE OF VISHNU, KASHMIR, LATE 7TH-9TH CENTURY

The four-armed deity stands in a protective posture, with the lower hands resting above the heads of his two personified attributes, Gadanari to his right holding a chaurie and Chakrapurusha to his left. Emerging between his ankles is the Earth goddess Prithvi, rising from the pedestal.

The muscular torso is adorned with finely detailed jewelry and a garment with folded drapery gathered at the waist. A yajnopavita falls along the legs, complemented by a broad sash crossing diagonally over the waist.

His serene face is characterized by large almond-shaped eyes, framed by long, pendulous earlobes. Elegantly incised curls cascade over his shoulders, surmounted by a tall, ornate crown, and backed by a circular halo.

Provenance: A private collection in the United Kingdom. Austrian private collection, acquired from the above.
Condition: Good condition with ancient wear, minor chips, losses to extremities, light nicks and small surface scratches, weathering and erosion, cracks. The figure has been coated with varnish some time ago, probably in the 19th century, which has browned over time. The stone with a rich, naturally grown, smooth patina.

Weight: 982 g
Dimensions: Height 18.8 cm

Expert’s note:
This sculpture can be dated between the late 7th and 9th centuries and reflects characteristics of the post-Gupta style. It closely parallels a 9th-century Vishnu figure in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 1983.509.1. Both sculptures share a sense of anatomical volume and similarly rendered drapery, with garments folded at the waist. These elements highlight the lasting influence of Classical Gandharan design. Notable shared features include a yajnopavita that descends to lower body and a broad sash crossing diagonally over the waist, motifs rooted in Gupta artistic conventions.
