Description

A SMALL OCHRE LIMESTONE STELE OF VISHNU, KASHMIR, LATE 7TH-9TH CENTURY

Superbly carved in the form of Vishnu, the four-armed deity stands in a protective pose, with the lower hands resting above the heads of two flanking attendants. His muscular form is adorned with finely detailed jewelry and a draped garment, the folds gathered at the waist. A yajnopavita descends along the legs, complemented by a broad sash crossing diagonally over the torso. His curled hair falls over the shoulders, surmounted by a crown, while the serene face is framed by a circular halo.

Provenance: A private collection in the United Kingdom. Austrian private collection, acquired from the above.
Condition: Fair condition overall, with signs of weathering and erosion consistent with age. The surface exhibits wear, cracks, scratches, losses, and nicks, along with a naturally developed patina. Some areas may have been re-carved following damage or significant surface degradation.

Weight: 125 g
Dimensions: Height 10 cm
