Description

A SANDSTONE LINTEL DEPICTING SHIVA WITH ATTENDANT DEITIES, CENTRAL INDIA

India, Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh, 9th-11th century. Finely carved in high relief with Shiva seated in lalitasana, flanked by two attendants and five deities holding various attributes. Each figure is dressed in incised garments and adorned with jewelry and garlands, their faces with serene expressions and hair arranged in a tall kiritamakuta.

Provenance: From the private collection of Olivier Maréchal, Belgium, acquired in India in 2009. A copy of a provenance statement, written and signed by Olivier Maréchal, dated 25 July 2024, confirming the above, accompanies this lot. Olivier Maréchal (b. 1973) is a noted Belgian collector and dealer specializing in the arts of India, Vietnam, and Thailand. He began his career in the mid-1990s, learning from his father who helped him with his first purchases. He later managed Surya Gallery in Brussels, Belgium.
Condition: Commensurate with age. Old wear, losses, nicks, scratches, signs of weathering and erosion, and encrustations. A central break, though present, does not significantly detract from the piece's character, allowing it to display very well.

Dimensions: Height 24 cm (excl. stand) and 43.5 cm (incl. stand), Length 63 cm
