KOMA KOKAKUSAI: A SUPERB FIVE-CASE GOLD LACQUER INRO WITH AN EAGLE ON A CHERRY BRANCH

Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of upright rectangular form, finely decorated with gold takamaki-e and hiramaki-e on a lustrous kinji ground. The front depicts a Hokusai-esque eagle, portrayed with character and charm, perched on a cherry branch highlighted with kirigane flakes. The eagle's eye is inlaid in painted crystal. The back shows an atmospheric red togidashi-e sun rising behind two sparrows fleeing from the eagle. Signed to the underside seki KOKAKUSAI. The interior of nashiji with gold fundame rims.

LENGTH 4.8 cm, HEIGHT 9.5 cm

Condition: Good condition, one small dent to the top from contact with an ojime, a fine age crack to the side of the top two cases, minor rubbing to edges, and typical losses to kirigane.

Koma Kokakusai is recorded to have worked for the Shogunate in Edo during the 19th century.

Compare a related gold lacquer inro with an eagle, dated to the 18th century, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, accession number 29.100.880.
