Description

JOKASAI: A SUPERB INLAID FOUR-CASE GOLD LACQUER INRO WITH A CROW AND A SQUID

Lineage of Yamada Jokasai, signed Jokasai 常嘉齋
Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of upright rectangular form, exquisitely adorned in gold, silver, and black takamaki-e, with accents of hiramaki-e, all set against a richly sprinkled kinji ground. The dynamic scene depicts a screaming crow in mid-attack, grasping a raden-inlaid squid and pulling it from the water, while the squid fiercely resists, its tentacles coiling around the crow’s head and talons. The crow’s plumage is rendered with exceptional delicacy, achieved through meticulously placed, minute incisions. Beneath the struggle, turbulent waves crash against jagged rocks, enhanced with kirigane flakes.

Signed to the underside JOKASAI. The interior of nashiji with gold fundame rims.

LENGTH 5.1 cm, HEIGHT 7.7 cm

Condition: Very good condition with a small loss to one of the cord holes and very minor wear including typical losses to the kirigane flakes.
