Description

A FINE INLAID SINGLE-CASE LACQUER WOOD INRO WITH PIGEONS

Unsigned
Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1603-1868)

Published: Tomkinson, Michael (1898) A Japanese Collection, no. 604 (unillustrated).

The carved wood body finely decorated in thick gold and red takamaki-e, as well as aoagai inlays. The front features a superbly rendered scene of two pigeons perched on a rock, delicately accented with kirigane flakes. One pigeon is exquisitely inlaid in aogai (mother-of-pearl), adding a luminous contrast to the composition. The rock formation seamlessly extends to the reverse, where it is met by red prunus blossom branches. The interior of nashiji with gold fundame rims.

HEIGHT 5.8 cm, LENGTH 8 cm

Condition: The mother-of-pearl inlay reattached. With a circumferential crack to the wood case. Otherwise, good condition and presenting very well.
Provenance: Ex-collection Michael Tomkinson (1841-1921), no. 604. With an old label pasted to the underside. Thierry de Maigret, Archeologie, Art Asiatiques, 11 December 2015, Paris, lot 178. French private collection, acquired from the above.

Auction comparison:
The design executed with thick lacquer and the quality of the mother-of-pearl are reminiscent of the work of Nomura Chohei. Compare a related mother-of-pearl inlaid two-case wood inro, attributed to Nomura Chohei, dated to the late 18th century, Zacke, Fine Netsuke & Sagemono, 16 April 2021, Vienna, lot 327, (sold for EUR 1,830).
