Description

WASHUSAI: A FINE FIVE-CASE GOLD LACQUER INRO WITH FIGHTING SHISHI

By Washusai, signed Washusai 和秀斎 with kakihan
Japan, 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Of upright cylindrical form, finely decorated with gold and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e on a kinji ground, and subtly inlaid with gold foil. The front depicts a lively shishi lion in a dynamic pose, well detailed with painted mother-of-pearl eyes, wild curling mane and sharp claws. The reverse similarly decorated with two fighting shishi. The interior of nashiji with gold fundame rims. The base with the gold-lacquered seal signature WASHUSAI and a red-lacquered kakihan.

LENGTH 4.5 cm, HEIGHT 9.5 cm

Condition: Very good condition with typical losses to the gold leaf inlays and minor expected traces of use.
Provenance:
Koller Auktionen, Auktion 50/3, June 1983, Zurich, lot 501. From a noted Swiss private collection, acquired from the above.

The artist appears to be unrecorded, however the red kakihan suggests a relation to the Kajikawa school in Edo.

Auction comparison:
Compare a closely related five-case gold lacquer inro with shishi among rocks and waterfall, by Hirai Masatsune, dated to the 19th century, at Bonhams, The Edward Wrangham Collection of Japanese Art, 15 May 2012, London, lot 327 (sold for GBP 2,250).
