Description

A FINE KURUMI (WALNUT) NETSUKE OF HANDAKA SONJA WITH HIS DRAGON

Unsigned
Japan, mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The kurumi netsuke very finely carved to depict Handaka Sonja with his hands clasped around a staff, dressed in voluminous robes, with a stern expression on his face. His dragon (tatsu) writhing to the other side, its scaly body twisting around the composition, flames emanating from its body. The back with ringed himotoshi.

HEIGHT 3.8 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and expected natural imperfections and related minuscule losses.
Provenance: From the private collection of Maybelle Dore. Maybelle (Betty) Dore started collecting Japanese antiques in the postwar years, during the 1950s and 1960s, when interest in Japanese art was generally very low. For her business she ventured to Japan on her own to assemble netsuke and related works of art, including pipe cases and kogo (incense containers). Betty was also a founding member and the first Chairwoman of the International Netsuke Society, Northern California Chapter.
