Description

A RARE ABSTRACT ROOTWOOD NETSUKE OF JUBOKKO

Signed with a kakihan
Japan, 19th century

Of abstract form, the rootwood cleverly picked and manipulated to depict Jubokko devouring a warrior. The branches of the yokai tree engulf the deceased soldier, forming a tube around his corpse, as it sucks the blood out of the victim. Chimney himotoshi to the side and signed to the underside with a kakihan.

HEIGHT 5.6 cm

Condition: Very good condition with wear and expected natural imperfections.

The Jubokko is a fearsome yokai tree from Japanese folklore, said to emerge on battlefields soaked with the blood of countless fallen warriors. Transformed into a supernatural entity by absorbing the blood of the dead, the Jubokko sustains itself on human blood. When an unsuspecting person wanders too close, the tree is said to ensnare its victim, transforming its branches into tube-like structures to drain their blood. Thanks to this gruesome feeding method, the Jubokko is believed to retain a perpetually fresh and healthy appearance. If cut, the tree is said to bleed like a living being. Curiously, despite its malevolent nature, a branch from a Jubokko is rumored to possess healing and purifying properties when used on the injured.
