Description

A LARGE AND UNUSUAL DRIFTWOOD NETSUKE OF A DRIED FISH

Unsigned
Japan, 17th-18th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Carved from a piece of natural flattened driftwood to depict a desiccated fish, its eyes inlaid with a wood peg. The material is almost left untouched save for the eye, mouth, and himotoshi. The surface with a fine polish.

LENGTH 17.3 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor expected wear.

It is well documented that the earliest netsuke were often improvised from everyday objects suitable as sagemono, such as natural gourds, pieces of wood, and other simple materials. The present netsuke belongs to this rare and highly significant category and is among the earliest known examples in existence.

Literature comparison:
Compare a related rootwood netsuke of a fish, unsigned, illustrated in Bushell, Raymond Netsuke (1975) Familiar & Unfamiliar, p. 93, no. 20.
