Description

A FINE KURUMI (WALNUT) NETSUKE OF A TIGER AND DRAGON

Unsigned
Japan, Iwashiro province, mid-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The kurumi netsuke very finely carved to depict a dragon confronting a tiger, the scaly body of the mythical beast writhing and twisting around the composition in a dramatic manner, and the feline’s characteristic stripes are rendered with alternating finely etched and smoothly polished areas, all framed by turbulent waves and scrolling clouds. With two himotoshi rimmed with kiku blossoms.

HEIGHT 3.7 cm

Condition: Very good condition with minor wear and expected natural imperfections including related minuscule losses and age cracks.

Tiger and dragon are Chinese cosmological symbols of the balancing forces in the world, yin (the feminine aspect) and yang (the masculine aspect). The tiger's roar is also said to generate wind, and the dragon clouds. The netsuke may have originally been meant to express the fluctuating nature of the world as envisioned in the practice of military divination, or forecasting, based on the Yijing (Book of Changes).

Literature comparison:
Compare a related kurumi double-walnut shell depicting a tiger and dragon, by Seimin, mid-19th century, illustrated by Meinertzhagen / Lazarnick (1986) MCI, Part B, p. 712.

Auction comparison:
Compare a related kurumi netsuke of a dragon, also unsigned, 3.7 cm high, at Zacke, Fine Japanese Art, 27 May 2022, Vienna, lot 278 (sold for EUR 2,781).
