Description

TSUKAMOTO KYOKUSAI: A SUPERB SO SCHOOL WOOD NETSUKE OF A FLOWERING CHRYSANTHEMUM

By Tsukamoto Kyokusai, signed Kyokusai 旭齋
Japan, Tokyo, early 20th century

The single bloom with tightly formed overlapping petals curled in over the stamen to form a compact composition, the looped stalk on the underside forming the himotoshi and signed KYOKUSAI.

LENGTH 3.8 cm

Condition: Excellent condition.
Provenance: Mark and Elizabeth Harding Collection, South Africa.

Tsukamoto Kyokusai was a contemporary of Gyokuso and Morita Sоkо. Born and raised in Kyoto, he settled in Tokyo in 1923. In his younger days he signed Hoshu as his chomei, changing it to Kyokusai and occasionally Kyokudo later in his life. Wood is the predominant material of Kyokusai's netsuke, though he occasionally used ivory. His subjects are frequently tradesmen and craftsmen at their tasks, but he is most noted for his superb representations of baskets and flowers. Not only are these baskets and flowers marvels of mechanical and technical proficiency, but some attain an incredible loveliness of design and composition as well.
