TETSUGENDO KYUSAI: A FINE WOOD NETSUKE OF A SPLITTING CHESTNUT

The netsuke masterfully stained and skillfully carved to deceive the eye (trompe-l'?il) as a chestnut splitting open at the tip, revealing the waxy nut inlaid in bone within. The surface simulated with natural imperfections, subtly indented grooves, and with masterful ukibori to the top of the shell where the cluster was attached to the cupule. Himotoshi to the underside and signed KYUSAI to [carved by Kyusai].

LENGTH 3.5 cm

Condition: Excellent condition.

Kyusai was born in Osaka on 29 March 1879. His real name was Hirai Shin and he learned carving from his father Hansen. He presented an incense case in the shape of a mokugyo to Prince Songaku Konoe. He was requested by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to enter the International Exhibition held in Paris in 1895 where he won a bronze prize for a bamboo flower vase titled “Goddess of Peace”. He died on 30 March 1938 at the age of 60 and is buried at the Hakugo-ji in Nara. He is widely regarded as one of the great netsuke carvers of the 20th century.
