OUCHI GYOKUSO: A MASTERFUL INLAID SO SCHOOL WOOD NETSUKE OF A CORN COB

By Ouchi Gyokuso (1879-1944), signed Gyokuso 玉藻 to 刀
Japan, Tokyo, early 20th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

Naturalistically carved as a corn cob wrapped inside its finely detailed husk, open to one side to reveal three rows of kernels inlaid in stained bone, and terminating in silks that form the natural himotoshi. The reverse with two generously excavated himotoshi above the signature GYOKUSO to [carved by Gyokuso].

LENGTH 5.2 cm

Condition: Good condition with minor wear and light traces of use. Minuscule nibbling to edges.

Ouchi Gyokuso (1879-1944) was the father of Ouchi Sosui (1911-1966) and together with Morita Soko (1879-1942) the most important pupil of Miyazaki Joso (1835-1910), the founder of the important So school in Tokyo.
