Description

CHIKUSEN: A FINE WOOD OKIMONO NETSUKE OF A SAMURAI WITH TWO ATTENDANTS

By Chikusen, signed Chikusen 竹仙
Japan, Tsu, second half of the 19th century

The samurai standing and tying his kamishimo as one kneeling attendant holds the shimo in place, the second seated, holding up his sword before handing it over to her master. Natural himotoshi and signed to the underside CHIKUSEN.

LENGTH 4.6 cm

Condition: Good condition with minor surface wear. Loss to the edge of two hairpins. The hilt repaired.
Provenance: Sotheby’s, Japanese Works of Art, Screens and Painting, 19 March 1992, London, lot 132. A private collection in the UK, acquired from the above.

Chikusen’s work is extremely rare; he lived at Tsu during the early Meiji period and was a fine draughtsman and poet.

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related netsuke of two samurai, by Chikusen, illustrated in Zacke, Netsuke und Inro, 1984, no. 128. Compare also a related wood okimono of six Rakkan, by Chikusen, see Davey, Neil K. (1974) Netsuke: A Comprehensive Study Based on the M.T. Hindson Collection, p. 216, no. 662.
