Description

SHOKO SUGONOYA: A RARE WOOD NETSUKE-OKIMONO OF A CAT GEISHA AND CLIENT

By Shoko Sugonoya, signed Shoko 尚古
Japan, Takayama, Hida province, late 19th century, Meiji period (1868-1912)

Finely carved as a cat geisha, standing on two legs, striking a dancing pose, one forepaw raised, as it masquerades as a woman, wearing a fine kimono with well-carved folds, the belt neatly incised with a geometric design. Her cat client curled up around her feet as he gapes in awe, mesmerized by the beguiling movement of the seductress, one paw resting against his head and the second placed on a set consisting of pipe case (kiseruzutsu) and tobacco pouch (tabako-ire). The eyes are inlaid with dark horn pupils. Natural himotoshi and signed to the underside SHOKO.

HEIGHT 5.5 cm

Condition: Repairs to the ears and edge of the robe. Otherwise good condition and presenting very well.

Museum comparison:
Compare a closely related wood netsuke of a cat prostitute and client, dated to the mid to late 19th century, 5.8 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, accession number 47.681.
