Description

OUCHI SOSUI: A FINE SO SCHOOL WOOD NETSUKE OF AN ARCHAIC CHINESE TOMB FIGURE

By Ouchi Sosui (1911-1966), signed Sosui 藻水
Japan, Tokyo, c. 1950

Published: Bushell, Raymond (1982) Random Thoughts on Netsuke Aesthetics, Netsuke Kenkyukai Study Journal, Vol. 2, No. 4, p. 23, fig. 2.

Superbly carved in the form of a tomb figure modeled after a Western Han dynasty earthenware model, the wood carefully chosen and its surface minutely textured in imitation of the real object, which was carefully studied by the artist. The kneeling lady is dressed in voluminous robes, her hands clasped tightly and raised to her chest in a greeting gesture, the billowing sleeves elegantly pooling in ribbed pleats to the center. The face modeled with a sensitive expression, heavy-lidded eyes, a broad nose, and lips forming a gentle smile; the hair neatly secured away from the face in a long braid. Himotoshi to the back and signed to the underside SOSUI.

HEIGHT 5.7 cm

Condition: Excellent condition.

Ouchi Sosui (1911-1966) was the eldest son of Ouchi Gyokuso (1879-1944). His real name was Jiro, and he was the only pupil of Morita Soko’s who completed his apprenticeship, becoming independent in 1932. Sosui was inspired by ancient Chinese and Japanese art. He began creating netsuke in the form of bronze vessels, terracotta guardian statues (Chinese and Haniwa), and animal figurines. Similar artists, like Nakamura Tokisada and Nishino Shotaro (Shoko), also carved netsuke in the forms of antiquities from China and Japan.

Auction comparison:
Compare a related wood netsuke of a maiden immortal derived from a Tang pottery model, by Ouchi Sosui, 20th century, 7 cm high, at Sotheby’s, Fine Netsuke, Ojime and Inro, 28 January 1985, Honolulu, lot 68.
