拍品描述
Tibet or Mongolia. Vajrasattva is seated in dhyanasana at the center on a lotus base, holding a vajra in his raised right hand and a ghanta in the lowered left hand, backed by a flaming mandorla and halo, all supported on a throne decorated with seated lions framed by turquoise cabochon inlays and geometric borders. He is surrounded by snow lions standing atop elephants, below a kirtimukha mask biting into snakes and flanked by birds. The reverse with a circular aperture and fitted copper cover incised with the double vajra symbol. A small loop for suspension to the top. Provenance: The Roger Liechti Collection, inventory no. C. 66 (lacquered to the back), Geneva, Switzerland, and thence by descent. Roger Liechti (1934-2010) was a prominent Swiss collector and scholar. At first, he developed a fascination with ancient Egypt and became a sought-after expert and appraiser in this field, before taking a strong interest in Asian art as well. During his many travels across Europe, perusing the salerooms of London and Paris as well as the Salons des Antiquaires in Basel and Lausanne, he amassed an impressive collection of antiquities and works of art from around the world. Much of his collection was later sold at Christie's London. Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, some of the inlays renewed, one inlay lost, tiny nicks, and light surface scratches.Weight: 223 g Dimensions: Height 12 cmThe 'Vajra Being' depicted here is a primordial buddha as well as a highly accomplished bodhisattva, with a perfected understanding of ultimate truth. He is the personification of the primary symbol of The Lighting Path. This important Tibetan Buddhist deity is the primary and ceaseless source of Vajrayana teachings. He manifests in the sambhogakaya (long-ku) or celestial form or to assist in liberating all sentient beings from the undesirable cycle of rebirth in samsara. The mantra of Vajrasattva (Dorje Sempa) has the power to cleanse any sentient being of past transgressions. He holds a ghanta (drilbu) symbolizing the female aspect of wisdom and a vajra (dorje) symbolizing the male qualities of skillful means and compassion. Together, these aspects indicate Vajrasattva's fully enlightened status.Auction result comparison:Type: Closely relatedAuction: Christie's London, 9 November 2012, lot 1038Price: GBP 2,375 or approx.
