拍品描述
Tibet, 19th to first half of the 20th century. The handle cast as the three-headed wrathful deity with flaming red hair from which emerge horse heads and writhing snakes, their faces with bulging eyes, furrowed brows, and grim expressions, framed by snake earrings and skull tiaras, terminating in a three-pronged vajra finial. The blade issuing from three flame-spewing makaras, supported on the original matching base in the form of overlapping petals with curled tips, centered to each side by a frog above two snakes. The base sealed with a copper plate incised with a double vajra. (2)Provenance: From an old private collection in southern Germany. Condition: Very good condition with some wear, traces of use, expected casting irregularities, scattered nicks, and light surface scratches. Remnants of old pigments.Weight: 2 kg Dimensions: Height 34.5 cmA phurbu (kila) is a three-edged peg usually made from metal or wood originating with Indian Tantric Buddhism and related to ritual mandala construction. The phurbu has been described in the West as a dagger with three blades. The finest metal phurbus are created from meteorite iron, while sandalwood is also popular. The various tantra literature describes different mediums for construction based on function and ritual practice. Literature comparison: Compare a closely related bronze phurbu in the Jacques Marchais Museum of Tibetan Art, New York, illustrated by Jeff Watt on Himalayan Art Resources, item number 75115. Compare a related Tibetan gilt copper alloy phurbu with the head of Hayagriva, dated to the 19th century, 24.8 cm long, in the Rhode Island School of Design Museum, object number 1989.110.41.
