A PAIR OF BRONZE 'MAKARA-HEAD' FINIALS, TIBET, 18TH-19TH CENTURY

Tibet. Each boldly cast and modeled in a ferocious expression, the mouth wide open in a furious roar baring sharp fangs below the upturned snout, the bulging eyes with incised round pupils, the scaly skin neatly punched, frame by a skillfully incised curled mane.Provenance: Collection of Jean-Claude Moreau-Gobard, acquired before 2000, and thence by descent to his son Christian Moreau-Gobard, and thence by further descent to his granddaughter Juliette Moreau-Gobard. A copy of a provenance statement written and signed by Juliette Moreau-Gobard, dated 16 February 2025, confirming the provenance and dating above, accompanies the lot. Jean-Claude Moreau-Gobard was an important French collector and dealer specializing in Asian art, born into a family of antiques experts in Paris. He was active from the 1950s until the 1980s. Today, the family business is continued by Juliette Moreau-Gobard.Condition: Very good condition with minor wear, traces of use, and casting irregularities. The bronze with a fine, naturally grown, dark patina.Weight:477 g and 513 gDimensions: Length 13.5 cm (each)Each with a modern metal stand.
