拍品描述
Probably Gilgit, 7th-8th century. Seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus pedestal with his hands held in dharmachakra mudra, wearing monastic robes with deeply incised rhythmic folds, and adorned with foliate jewelry. The face with a serene expression and downcast eyes below elegantly arched brows, his bow-shaped lips forming a calm smile, flanked by long pendulous earlobes suspending large floral earrings, the loose curls piled elegantly into a topknot behind the foliate crown. The crown and some of the jewelry such as the necklace, armlets, and bracelets are picked out in fine parcel-gilt.Provenance: From the collection of The Zelnik Istvan Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Dr. Istvan Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Extensive wear, losses, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, losses, small nicks and dents, light scratches, tarnishing. The halo is a later replacement, which has been soldered onto the back of the figure. Some of the parcel-gilt may have been renewed in a later period. The statue has a solid, naturally grown patina with malachite and cuprite encrustations overall.Weight: 234.3 gDimensions: Height 8.9 cmThe Swat Valley is located along the upper stream of the Indus in the heartland of the Gandhara region. It was a melting pot of various people and arts and served as a link between India and Central Asia and further eastwards for a constant flow of Buddhist pilgrims. The earlier Gandhara style is still echoed in the art of many icons of the Swat Valley, as visible in the present work's physiognomy and drapery. The lotus base on which he sits, on the other hand, is typical for Swat Valley images. Thus, this fine bronze figure perfectly embodies the aforementioned melting pot of various styles.Gilgit was an important center of Buddhism during the 1st millennium CE, with influences from the Gandhara and Kashmiri Buddhist traditions. The Gilgit Manuscripts, discovered in the 1930s, are among the oldest surviving Buddhist texts.Literature comparison:Compare a related Gandharan-style Chinese gilt-bronze figure of Shakyamuni Buddha, Sixteen Kingdoms, dated 4th-early 5th century, 12.3 cm high, at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 8 October 2019, lot 3625. Compare a closely related brass figure of Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara with silver and copper inlays, Swat Valley, 17.1 cm high, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, object number 2012.247.Auction result comparison: Type: Closely relatedAuction: Bonhams Paris, 12 June 2023, lot 46Price: EUR 40,960 or approx.
