拍品描述
Kushan period, 3rd-4th century. Finely carved to depict the Future Buddha Maitreya in princely attire seated atop a throne, his hands raised in abhaya mudra, wearing a richly pleated dhoti, fine beaded necklace with pendant, and a turban, surrounded by similarly dressed musicians playing various instruments.Provenance: A private collection in eastern Switzerland.Condition: Condition commensurate with age. Extensive wear, obvious losses, chips, cracks, scratches, signs of weathering and erosion, and encrustations. Mounted on a metal frame. (2)Weight: 8.7 kgDimensions: Size 37 x 34 cmIn the ancient region of Gandhara, the sculptural tradition was strongly influenced by the Hellenistic style left in the wake of Alexander. Local artisans favored the principles of figural naturalism, in particular the athletic and heroic idealized body. The depiction of the Indian dhoti and sanghati, like that of the Greek chiton and himation, presented an opportunity to reproduce voluminous folds of drapery with wondrous aplomb, as is evident in the present work.Maitreya is considered the Buddha of the future. When the dharma is forgotten on Earth, he will descend from the Tushita Heaven, where he resides, to be born in our realm as the next Buddha. When he is born on Earth, Maitreya is depicted in rich robes similar to that of the historical Gautama Buddha, prior to his renunciation of worldly goods. In the Gandharan period, Maitreya is considered the most important Bodhisattva.Literature comparison:A Gandharan grey schist relief from an earlier period that also depicts musicians and features a Corinthian column is housed at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland, Ohio (acc. no. 1930.328.1). This panel depicts musicians and dancers from the ancient region of Phrygia. They wear baggy tunics with trousers tied at the ankles and peaked caps, playing drum and lyre and dancing.Compare a related Gandharan schist relief depicting the future Buddha Maitreya seated in a similar pose surrounded by devotees, dated to the 3rd century, 48.7 x 61.8 cm, in the Museum fuer Asiatische Kunst, Berlin, accession number MIK I 87.Auction result comparison: Type: RelatedAuction: Christie's New York, 23 September 2020, lot 612Price: USD 100,000 or approx.
