A RARE GOLD- AND SILVER-DAMASCENED IRON RITUAL AXE, WEDHUNG, JAVA, 15TH CENTURY

Indonesia. The broad blade finely damascened to one side with a swastika pattern interspersed with a dharmachakra as well as floral and geometric designs, and finely incised to the other side with a fierce demon in a dancing pose. The wood hilt mounted with bronze fittings incised with geometric and floral motifs.

Provenance: From an old private collection in Croatia.
Condition: Good condition with minor wear, traces of use, and casting irregularities. The blade with areas of corrosion. Repairs to the hilt.

The wedhung is a handheld weapon in the shape of a knife. It symbolizes the loyalty and readiness of a royal servant to the reigning king. The wedhung is forged from metal, with its handle made from either wood or iron.
