A BRONZE FIGURE OF BUDDHA TEACHING HIS FIRST SERMON, MAJAPAHIT EMPIRE

Indonesia, 1293–1527 or a bit later. Cast seated on a lotus throne raised on a tiered plinth, a deer seated in recumbent pose before him, the corners decorated with lotus buds, swirling flames, and stupas. The deity is dressed in a diaphanous robe draped over his left shoulder, his serene face is detailed with almond-shaped eyes, arched brows, bow-shaped lips forming a gently smile, and a raised urna, flanked by long pendulous lobes.

Provenance: From the collection of Paolo Bertuzzi. Paolo Bertuzzi (1943-2022) was a fashion stylist from Bologna, Italy. He was the son of Enrichetta Bertuzzi, founder of Hettabretz, a noted Italian fashion company with customers such as the Rothschild family, Audrey Hepburn, and Elizabeth Taylor. Paolo Bertuzzi later took over his mother’s business and designed exclusive pieces, some of which were exhibited in the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, USA. He was also an avid collector of antiques for more than 60 years. His collection includes both archaic and contemporary art, and he edited two important books about Asian art, Goa Made - An Archaeological Discovery, about a large-scale archaeological project carried out with the Italian and Indonesian governments, and Majapahit, Masterpieces from a Forgotten Kingdom.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Wear and casting irregularities. Minor losses, tiny nicks, signs of weathering and erosion, and encrustations. The bronze with a dark patina showing hues of malachite. Small repairs.

Weight: 1,605 g
Dimensions: Height 25 cm

The coiled hair is arranged elegantly over the domed ushnisha and the figure is backed by a foliate throne-back supported by mythical beasts, topped by a small chatri.

The couchant deer symbolizes the deer park (Mrigadava) at Sarnath where Buddha preached his first sermon.

Literature comparison:
Compare an earlier, related bronze figure of the Preaching Buddha, Jawa Tengah (Province), dated 700-900 AD, in the collection of the Nationaal Museum van Wereldculturen and included in the permanent exhibition at the Museum Volkenkunde, Leiden, The Indonesian Bronzes.
