A SILVER FIGURE OF JAMBHALA, LATE MAJAPAHIT PERIOD

Indonesia, Java, circa 15th-16th century or slightly later. The rotund God of Wealth seated in lalitasana on a plump cushion, his left foot gently toppling over a jar filed with treasures as he holds a money bag in his right hand and cradles a spewing gems in his left. The deity is dressed in a foliate incised dhoti and adorned in jeweled armlets and necklaces, the face with a serene expression with wide open eyes surmounted by a conical headdress, backed by a foliate throne back modeled as a gateway flanked by leogryphs mounted on elephants in openwork, all supporting a flaming nimbus, the plinth centered by a cluster of jewels on each side.

Provenance: The collection of The Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum. Institutional art collection in Belgium, acquired from the above. Dr. István Zelnik, President of the Hungarian South and Southeast Asian Research Institute, is a former high-ranking Hungarian diplomat who spent several decades in Southeast Asia, building the largest known private collection of Asian art in Europe.
Condition: Very good condition, commensurate with age. Old wear, casting irregularities, expected losses, small dents, minuscule nicks, pitting, and surface abrasion.
Alloy composition range: 98.78% silver and 1.21% tin. The lot was tested by the Zelnik István Southeast Asian Gold Museum.
