HARUMASA: A FINE HAMANO SCHOOL SHIBUICHI KOZUKA OF GAMA SENNIN AND HIS TOAD

The migakiji (polished ground) shibuichi kozuka skillfully engraved in kebori, katakiribori, and worked with gold hirazogan and takazogan, depicting Gama sennin, a Daoist sage and alchemist, holding a plant in his right hand, with his companion animal, a toad, as a symbol of good fortune and success, perched on his shoulder. The scenery is framed by a pine tree. Signed HARUMASA with kakihan (artist’s cursive monogram) to the shakudo migakiji reverse.

Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear, such as very few shallow scratches and tiny nicks.
Provenance: From an Australian private collection of sword fittings, collected over centuries with a discerning eye for quality and comprising mostly exceptionally fine kozuka from the noted Hamano and Goto schools.

The Hamano School is a prestigious Japanese sword-making tradition founded by Hamano Masayoshi in the 18th century. Known for its intricate and refined metalwork, the school specialized in crafting high-quality and detailed decorative elements. The Hamano style is renowned for its elegance and the intricate use of soft metals, blending art with the functional craft of swordsmanship.
