ICHIJOSAI HIROTOSHI: A FINE SHIBUICHI KOZUKA WITH A SAGE ACCOMPANIED BY AN ATTENDANT

By Uchikoshi Ichijosai Hirotoshi (active c. 1800-1825), signed Ichijosai Hirotoshi 一乗齋 弘壽 and kakihan
Japan, early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The migakiji (polished ground) shibuichi kozuka finely worked in gold, silver, shibuichi, and suaka (refined copper) takazogan, depicting a sage accompanied by a karako boy, carrying a cloth bag containing a koto. The sage and the boy travel through a landscape with a rocky waterfall and pine trees. Signed ICHIJOSAI HIROTOSHI with kakihan (artist’s cursive monogram) to the kebori engraved reverse.

Condition: Excellent condition with minor surface wear.
Provenance: From an Australian private collection of sword fittings, collected over centuries with a discerning eye for quality and comprising mostly exceptionally fine kozuka from the noted Hamano and Goto schools.

Uchikoshi Ichijosai Hirotoshi (active c.1800-1825) is listed in the Haynes Index of Japanese Sword Fittings and Associated Artists on p. 293 (H 01415.0). Native of Mito in Hitachi Province, he later moved to Kanda in Edo, he was the first student of Yatabe Michitoshi (H 05072) in Mito and afterwards the student of the second Tamagawa Yoshinaga (H 11915) in Edo.
