A FINE HAMANO SCHOOL SHIBUICHI KOZUKA WITH RIHAKU

Japan, 18th-19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)

The migakiji (polished ground) shibuichi kozuka finely worked in shishiabori, katakiribori and kebori, depicting the legendary poet Rihaku (Li Bai), seated next to a large sake vessel, the details picked out in gold and silver. To the right, a sunken circular window reveals the branch of a weeping willow extending outwards.

Condition: Very good condition with minor surface wear.
Provenance: From an Australian private collection of sword fittings, collected over centuries with a discerning eye for quality and comprising mostly exceptionally fine kozuka from the noted Hamano and Goto schools.

The Hamano School is a prestigious Japanese sword-making tradition founded by Hamano Masayoshi in the 18th century. Known for its intricate and refined metalwork, the school specialized in crafting high-quality and detailed decorative elements. The Hamano style is renowned for its elegance and the intricate use of soft metals, blending art with the functional craft of swordsmanship.
