? A GILT AND LACQUERED ZITAN FIGURE OF PALDEN LHAMO, TIBET, 17TH-EARLY 18TH CENTURY

Finely carved to depict Shri Devi in her wrathful form, the deity riding her mule through a sea of blood, seated in lalitasana on a human corpse with its head intact, the primary hands holding a sword and kapala, and the radiating secondary arms with a khatvanga and decapitated head. Adorned with beaded jewelry, a mundamala around her neck, and a splayed skin thrown on her back, her face with an enraged expression, marked bulging eyes, flaming brows, and an open mouth revealing sharp teeth and fangs, the flaming hair neatly incised behind the skull tiara.

Provenance: Collection of Moke Mokotoff, New York, United States, by repute. Spink & Son Ltd., London, United Kingdom, 1991. Nik Douglas, acquired from the above. A copy of the invoice from Spink & Son, addressed to Nik Douglas, dated 31 October 1991, confirming the dating above, and stating a purchase price of USD 3,900 or approx. EUR 8,300 (converted and adjusted for inflation at the time of writing), accompanies this lot. Nik Douglas (1944-2012) was a renowned author, curator, and Asian art expert. Between 1966 and 1974, he traveled through South and Southeast Asia, visiting remote areas of India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Sikkim, Thailand, and Indonesia, building up his knowledge of the customs, beliefs and spiritual practices of Hindus and Buddhists. He researched Oriental medicine, alchemy, art, sculpture and mysticism, studying with Hindu yogis, Buddhist lamas, and doctors. The Buckingham Collection was built by Nik Douglas, his mother, and his grandfather as well as further collectors in the family. Part of the collection was exhibited in 2010 by The Tibet House, New York, The Buddha Image: Out of Uddiyana.
Condition: Fine condition with wear and natural imperfections including expected age cracks and splits, small chips, minor losses, few nicks, tiny scratches, losses to gilt and lacquer, two arms with old repairs, minor touchups. Overall, displaying remarkably well!

The wrathful form of Shri Lakshmi, Palden Lhamo, which translates to glorious goddess, is the principle female wisdom protector of Tantric Buddhism, as well as the main companion of the enlightened protector Mahakala. She is almost always depicted riding side-saddle atop her mount, the mule, through an ocean of blood.
