拍品描述
A SMALL BRONZE FIGURE OF A WARRIOR, TIBET, 18TH CENTURY OR EARLIER

Well cast seated atop a tiered and scalloped base, the right knee raised and the left pushed to the side, the large hands extended sideways. The bare-chested semi-wrathful deity is dressed in a long skirt gathering in neatly detailed folds at the top of the base, wearing heavy boots, and adorned with plain jewelry. The face with a fierce expression marked by wide almond-shaped eyes and bushy furrowed brows, the hair parted down the center and elegantly falling in strands over the shoulders.

Provenance: French trade. Acquired from a private collection.
Condition: Good condition with wear and casting flaws. Few nicks, tiny scratches, light warping, minor losses, and some structural cracks. Remnants of pigment.

Weight: 272. 8 g
Dimensions: Height 7 cm

Expert’s note:
According to Jeff Watt of Himalayan Art Resources, Buddhist deities depicted wearing heavy boots are of Tibetan origin and not originating in India, and generally indicate a Tibetan indigenous deity. Most figures who wear boots are guardians (see fig. 1, a gilt copper alloy figure of Dhritarashtra, circa 18th century, at Bonhams New York, 18 March 2013, lot 160), protectors (see fig. 2, a gilt bronze figure of Dorje Drolo, circa 15th century), kings (see fig. 3, a gilt copper alloy figure of a Tibetan king, 18th century, at Bonhams New York, 14 March 2017, lot 3208), or warriors. The semi-wrathful face, bare chest, and powerful body indicate the present lot depicts a rare warrior.
