? A PURPLE LIMESTONE HEAD OF BUDDHA, LATE NORTHERN WEI DYNASTY

Expert authentication: Dr. Chang Qing has authenticated this lot, noting its stylistic similarities to the Northern Wei Buddha images found in the North of China, in the Henan and Shandong provinces. A notarized copy of Dr. Chang’s expertise, dated April 19, 2021, in the State of New York, accompanies this lot.
Dr. Chang holds a Ph.D. in Art History from the University of Kansas and has held prestigious positions, including post-doctoral fellow at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and senior research fellow at the Freer and Sackler Galleries of the Smithsonian Institute. He has conducted extensive research in China, participating in archaeological excavations at various historical sites. Dr. Chang is the author of several influential works, including Compassionate Beings in Metal and Stone: Chinese Buddhist Sculptures from The Freer Gallery of Art (2016) and Light of the Buddha in the Desert: Essays on Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang from 5th-14th Centuries (2012). He is currently a professor at Arts College, Sichuan University.

China, 385–535, c. 500 AD. This powerfully carved Buddha image exemplifies several of the hallmark features of Northern Wei art, which emerged after 400 AD in the northern regions of China, particularly in Henan and Shandong, under the leadership of the Tuoba. The piece is distinguished by its gently rounded face that conveys a serene demeanor, with heavy-lidded, downcast eyes beneath arched brows, a slender nose, and a sharply defined mouth with bow-shaped lips and a finely pronounced philtrum. The large ears with pendulous lobes frame the face, while the hair is meticulously arranged in wide, stylized curls over the high domed ushnisha, all quite characteristic of Northern Wei sculpture.
Adding to its uniqueness, the Buddha is carved from a purple limestone of exceptional texture, almost fossiliferous in nature. This rare stone enhances the sculpture's depth and subtlety, contributing to the overall impression of timeless calm and spiritual authority that is typical of late Northern Wei artistry.
