拍品描述
A LIMESTONE HEAD OF A BODHISATVVA, QINGZHOU STYLE, EASTERN WEI DYNASTY, 6TH CENTURY

China, 534-550. Finely carved, the face with a serene expression marked by heavy-lidded downcast eyes, arched brows, a slender nose, and a sharply carved mouth well detailed with bow-shaped lips, flanked by large ears with pendulous lobes. The hair cascading in rounded folds over the forehead, adorned by a tasseled diadem and backed by a foliate nimbus.

Provenance: The Hocquet Collection, Monaco and Belgium, acquired in the mid-1990s. During this time, the Hocquets sourced works from reputable dealers, including the French expert Jean-Claude Moreau-Gobard, who also reviewed their collection. The acquisition date, around the time of the Qingzhou discovery or slightly earlier, aligns with reports of comparable Eastern Wei finds dating back to the 1980s, particularly near the Longxing Temple.
Condition: Good condition, commensurate with age. Ancient wear, signs of weathering and erosion, encrustations, obvious losses, cracks, chips, nicks, scratches.

Dimensions: Height 27 cm (excl. stand)

With a modern metal stand. (2)

Literature comparison:
Compare a closely related limestone torso of a bodhisattva, Eastern Wei dynasty, excavated in 1996 at the Longxing Temple in Qingzhou, Shandong Province, and exhibited by the Peranakan Museum, Singapore, Serenity in Stone: The Qingzhou Discovery, 16 January-26 April 2009. Compare a related gray limestone head of a bodhisattva, exhibited by J. J. Lally, Two Thousand Years of Chinese Sculpture, New York, 2008, no. 5.
