A RARE PAINTED LIMESTONE RELIEF OF GUANYIN, NORTHERN WEI TO SUI DYNASTY

China, 5th-6th century. Finely carved and painted in red, green, and black pigments, wearing a beaded necklace and a thin robe. The bodhisattva’s compassionate expression marked by heavy-lidded eyes, gently arched brows, a broad nose, and full bow-shaped lips, flanked by elongated earlobes, the neatly incised hair pulled up into a high chignon secured by a red sash.

Provenance: From a French private collection.
Condition: Excellent condition considering its age, with typical signs of weathering, erosion, minor nicks, and small losses. It is coated with an old layer of transparent varnish. Although unlikely, some minor historic repairs may be concealed beneath.

Weight: 20.1 kg (incl. stand)
Dimensions: Height 48.8 cm (incl. stand), 39 cm (excl. stand)

Mounted on a modern stand. (2)

Literature comparison:
